The village of WASS is a small hamlet one and a half miles south of Sutton Bank (A 170) and half a mile from the spectacular mediaeval ruins of Byland Abbey, a key part of English Heritage. The area is a haven for holidaymakers, walkers and cyclists with Ampleforth Abbey, the Kilburn White Horse and “Mousey” Thompson all less than 5 miles away. Flamingo Land, Lightwater Theme Park, Scarborough, Captain Cook's Whitby and the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors are all easily accessible by car. The Wombwell Arms served for many years as the local Estate granary and mortuary (with the inevitable resident ghost!) before being licensed as a public house in 1924. The Inn was initially managed by Cameron Ales before becoming an independent Free house in 1971. Steve and Mary Wykes have owned the Wombwell Arms since August 2004 and, together with chef Justin Browning, offer a personal and friendly service dedicated to establishing the best Inn in North Yorkshire . Already featured in the 2005 Good Pub, Michelin, AA and Alistair Sawday guides, we have only 1 market strategy – to ensure that visitors will want to return time and time again………….. |
